Yaskawa Motoman brings extensive automation experience and an understanding of clinical diagnostics specimen processing together with an array of robotics and motion control products and technology. Through this experience and technology we are helping companies improve the efficiency, accuracy and robustness of their clinical laboratory operations.

Process improvement and automation are Yaskawa Motoman’s core competencies. Yaskawa Motoman takes an industrial engineering approach to characterization of laboratory processes and development and analysis of improvement strategies. Recently these process improvement techniques have been popularized in the clinical laboratory realm, while “Six Sigma” and “LEAN” have been operating principles for factory automation for many years.

Working with a number of high-volume reference laboratories beginning in 1999, Yaskawa Motoman brought leading-edge industrial automation technology to the clinical laboratory field. The high throughput (1,000 tubes per hour or more) and flexibility requirements in laboratories are similar to many industrial automation challenges. The solutions offered by Yaskawa Motoman are based upon proven product platforms (AutoSorter) along with engineered designs to meet the specific needs of each laboratory operation. Partnering with labs to understand current and future challenges and realize objectives for improved efficiency and quality is our mission, and Motoman is committed to provide the resources and the solutions to meet those goals.

Yaskawa Motoman offers a line of pre- and post-analytic specimen processing instruments for moderate-volume (1 Million tubes/yr) and larger labs. AutoSorter III provides tube sorting, centrifugation, decapping, recapping, instrument rack loading and archiving. The AutoSorter III may be configured as a stand-alone workstation to process all incoming and post-analytic specimens, or it may be track connected to other instruments and analyzers for a total laboratory automation solution. AutoSorter II is a high-volume sorter that processes over 1,000 tubes/hr. for pre-analytic sorting/rack loading as well as archiving. This instrument may also be configured as stand-alone or track connected as part of a large-scale specimen processing system.

Yaskawa Motoman offers additional instruments for aliquoting, decapping, recapping, thaw and mix, and storage solutions. Our extensive engineering capabilities are available to address unique requirements that are not addressed by off-the-shelf solutions. We partner with other best-in-class suppliers including Aloka and FlexLink to offer the most robust, highest-performance solutions for high-volume laboratory specimen processing.

Yaskawa Motoman is available to consult with laboratory managers on process improvement objectives to develop and build optimized solutions for specimen processing workflow. These solutions make best use of AutoSorter and other Yaskawa/Motoman platforms in addition to unique automation process solutions and integration of multiple process cells into fully automated workflow solutions including informatics (middleware). Examples of unique single workcell solutions to fully automated pre- and post-clinical processing solutions may be found in case studies and videos.


Yaskawa Motoman offers a variety of AutoSorter™ specimen processing solutions that are ideal for a range of clinical laboratory environments. AutoSorter provides improved processing accuracy, specimen traceability and relieves laboratory staff of repetitive tasks and exposure to infection. Various configurations include centrifugation, decapping and sorting to instrument racks, as well as archive consolidation. They may be stand-alone or linked together with aliquoters, recappers and other process-specific instrumentation.

AutoSorter was Yaskawa Motoman’s first solution to high-volume sorting and processing for the clinical lab market. Additional AutoSorter products have followed AutoSorter I, improving on the original design and offering alternative capabilities and configurations to meet a broad range of laboratory requirements.

AutoSorter II

Description: AutoSorterII Motoman Robot Sort Clinical LabAutoSorter II is a high-throughput, robust instrument for tube sorting, rack loading, archiving and other specimen processing operations performed at >1,000 tubes per hour. Flexibility is a key feature of all AutoSorter designs, including AutoSorter II. Many different tube sizes, cap configurations and “personality rack” styles may be processed concurrently, eliminating the constraint that the lab must conform to the limitations of the automation. AutoSorter II includes drawers for loading input specimens as well as customer-specified racks for output sorting targets. The drawers are easily reconfigured to adapt to changes from shift to shift and long term (changes in instrument platforms). In high-volume environments, AutoSorter II may be equipped with conveyors to provide greater queue capacity for longer walkaway times. AutoSorter II may also be connected to conveyorized specimen processing and TLA systems.

AutoSorter III

Description: AutosorterIII Motoman specimen processing robotAutoSorter III brings reliable specimen processing automation into larger hospital and medical center environments. AutoSorter III includes a new, linear-drive motion platform with multiple specimen handlers packaged in a compact footprint. Specimens may be centrifuged, decapped, and loaded into instrument-specific racks ready for testing. Following the design principles of AutoSorter I and II, AutoSorter III is designed to be robust for high uptime and long service life, as well as providing flexibility to handle a wide variety of sample tubes, closures and racks to meet the needs within your laboratory.

AutoSorter III is designed to be a stand-alone instrument or track connected to large specimen processing or TLA systems.
