In 1994, Motoman entered the robot rebuild market to better address the aftermarket service requirements of some of our major customers who needed to save capital dollars. It was jointly determined that the redeployment of existing Motoman robots that had been rebuilt and covered with a like-new warranty would help these customers maximize capital dollars.
The benefits of Motoman's rebuild and retrofit programs offer lower cost (typically 40-60% of a new), while virtually eliminating the need for both operator and maintenance training. Operators and maintenance personnel are already familiar with the equipment, resulting in decreased start-up time and training. One day to several weeks of time can be saved with these programs.
Our Rebuild/Retrofit Team is looking forward to the new challenges presented by recent changes in the Robotic Industry Association (RIA) standards. We are currently preparing to introduce new programs that will allow us to retrofit our more mature robots and systems to these new standards. Motoman looks forward to meeting the needs and challenges of re-deployment brought forth by our customer base YOU!
All robot manipulators sent through Motoman's robot rebuild program are functionally tested and inspected. The robots are then completely disassembled; harmonic drives and RV gears are replaced as required; bearings and internal wiring harnesses are replaced. The robot is then reassembled, lubricated, painted, new labels are applied, and a 24-hour repeatability test is completed to ensure that it will meet or exceed "original equipment manufacturer's specifications."

In 1996, with the success of the Robot Rebuild Program, Motoman introduced the Robot Core Exchange program to decrease potential production losses while robots are being rebuilt. This exchange program is designed to address the needs of customers with very heavy production needs and no spare robot. Motoman supplies a complete rebuilt robot that is exchanged for the customer's defective robot, typically within 4-5 hours of total downtime.
In 1998, Motoman expanded AfterMarket services further when customers indicated that there was a need to add a new positioner, an additional robot, a different power source, etc. to their existing system. Requests also included rebuilding a complete system for use in a new program. This program ensures that the robots and system continues to perform with the accuracy, repeatability, and reliability that is required to ensure continued quality and production standards, while minimizing costly downtime and loss of production.
