Posted by Bob Graff on Jul 5, 2016 12:00:00 AM

We recently surveyed members of the Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE) to get a handle on the state of robotics education in America. In the course of four days, we heard back from nearly three hundred teachers

How Could 240 Minutes Save You More on Manufacturing?

Posted by Zane Michael on Apr 25, 2016 3:00:00 PM

Two hundred forty minutes could save you $240,000 or more on your manufacturing process, but unlike those GEICO® commercials, not everybody knows that. Some of the companies that are in the know, however, say it’s because they agreed to a plant audit.

Speaking One Language is Better Than Two

Posted by Dean Elkins on Mar 14, 2016 5:00:31 AM

In a multi-cultural world with many spoken languages, it’s beneficial to know more than one. But if you’re working with robots inside a manufacturing facility, speaking only one language is better. The singular control concept makes it easier to implement automation and save on programming costs.

Meet the Robots

Posted by Jason Farmer on Feb 29, 2016 3:29:16 AM

Last fall, I was fortunate to visit Japan for the third time during my Yaskawa Motoman tenure. I was especially eager to see Yaskawa’s recently opened Robot Village in Kitakyushu, approximately 600 miles southwest of Tokyo. The Robot Village, which commemorates the 100th anniversary of Yaskawa Electric Corp., is a publicly open green space that includes Yaskawa’s Global Innovation Center. Yaskawa created the Robot Village partly so visitors can interact with robotic technology.

Mind the Skills Gap

Posted by Bob Graff on Jan 11, 2016 5:28:19 AM

Part of Charles Speelman’s job is connecting students and employers. But Speelman isn’t a recruiter; he’s an educator. Three years ago, as superintendent of Tri-Rivers Career Center in Marion, Ohio, Speelman was getting calls from companies saying that there weren’t enough skilled workers entering the trades, especially manufacturing. So, Speelman (with an approximately $15-million “Straight A Grant” from Ohio) launched the Robotics & Advanced Manufacturing Technology Education Collaborative, known as RAMTEC. Students at RAMTEC get to work with and learn about the same machines and tools used by many manufacturers.

4 Things to Consider When Selecting a Robotics Integrator

Posted by Sam Schenck on Dec 17, 2015 11:30:02 AM

Imagine you’ve decided to automate an application. You’ve chosen robotics to be the fulcrum, but you need a robotics integrator to help you reach your goal. Once you have researched whom to speak with, how do you compare these integrators? There are 4 "Cs” to sizing up any integrator; I define them as concept, cost, capabilities and capacity.

A Robotic Helping Hand for the Welder Shortage

Posted by Glen Ford on Nov 23, 2015 4:34:26 AM

If you have more welding work than you know how to handle, you’re not alone. Help is becoming increasingly hard to find. Thirty years ago, the number of welders in America surpassed 550,000, but by 2013, the Bureau of Labor Statistics found there were just 343,000. Experts at the American Welding Society (AWS) say there will be a welder shortage of 290,000 skilled positions (including instructors, inspectors and engineers) between now and 2020.
