Taking robotic welding to a new level, collaborative workcells that can be moved throughout the shop floor, as needed, are helping manufacturers deal with tough challenges. From improved floorspace utilization and part optimization to cultivating a more stable workforce, the benefits of flexible cobots are clear. Well-suited for small- to medium-sized part production for medium volume fabrication, these pre-engineered systems are ideal for replacing or supplementing manual welding.
For Yaskawa, meeting the demand for a portable job shop capable of human-collaborative (HC) interaction has been met head-on with the ArcWorld® HC. Part of Yaskawa’s proven line of ArcWorld welding workcells, the ArcWorld HC takes the concept of a traditional welding workcell and shrinks it down to the size of a welding table.
ArcWorld HC Offerings
Providing three-sided access, this flexible solution offers a 1,200 mm x 2,400 mm perforated Flextur fixture table with a Yaskawa human-collaborative HC10DTP robot. Also included are a retractable arc curtain, a built-in exhaust hood, a compatible power supply (Miller®, Lincoln Electric, SKS, OTC or Fronius), a 14-gauge metal tool board, a tool balancer and a debris tray. A 120 VAC 20-Amp electrical extension outlet and 120 psi air connection are also provided for common welding tools. Overhead LED lighting provides interior illumination, and solid wheels and leveling feet enable quick and easy installation or relocation. Wire spool and shield gas bottle holders are optional.
Power and Force Limiting (PFL) technology enables safe operation and hand-guided teaching allows for easy programming without a pendant. A 1,379 mm maximum working range and a 10 kg payload capacity help to process parts up to 500 H x 2,000 W x 800 D mm, and an IP67 rating enables welding without additional coverings or equipment. To increase welding production, as needed, fast air cut speeds (250 mm/s) are easily achieved with the arc curtain closed. Conversely, air cut speeds can be maintained at collaborative speed (200 mm/s) when the curtain is open.
Please note: Yaskawa America, Inc. performed a risk assessment for the ArcWorld HC as a partially completed piece of machinery. This document shall be reviewed and updated by the user prior to production, and as the robot system is modified to document and validate the system safety (i.e., the addition of tooling, equipment etc.).

ArcWorld HC Start-up (8:36):
This video offers a start-up guide tutorial that covers concepts such as moving the robot from ship position, resetting the PFL alarm after an impact, clamping the part, test-starting the program/checking the robot motion, playing back the robot motion, operating the light curtains and welding the part.
Weld-In-Teach and ReStart (4:03):
This tutorial takes viewers through the steps for testing the system, using the, Weld-In-Teach function. It also covers the Functional Safety Unit and robot operation with the light curtains open vs. the light curtains closed, as well as what to do in the event of a PFL alarm. Likewise, retracting the weld torch and resuming the weld sequence after the robot stops due to a PFL alarm is discussed.
Touch Sensing Option (1:21):
This video quickly instructs on the economical option of Touch Sensing and how it can add flexibility to the ArcWorld HC’s capability. Especially helpful for when parts vary, Touch Sensing (aka: Wire Touch) involves the physical touch of a weld wire from the end of the torch to detect the conductive surface of the part about to be welded. This tutorial briefly covers searching the part, setting the wire length and programming for touch sensing.
Touch Sensing How To (16:35):
This tutorial provides helpful pointers for the programming of Touch Sensing instructions. From maintaining constant wire length and cutting the wire to giving a step-by-step demonstration for the programming process, this detailed video may be extremely helpful to those new to robotic welding. The pendant AutoTeach feature will be discussed, with an overview of setting variables like search type, search speed, search distance, lap offset, etc.
Fume Exhaust (1:14):
Here, viewers will be introduced to the fume mitigation options the ArcWorld HC has to offer. Plus, a demonstration of the exhaust capabilities is given. Controlling these capabilities from the I/F panel or via robot outputs is also briefly discussed.
